Accidental Icon: What to Wear #NYFW2014 and First Day of Class
Since one of the goals of this blog is to invite my readers to be more self-reflective about fashion, I waited until now to write about NYFW.
The first week of September meant I was thinking about what to wear to my “firsts”: NYFW and class. In both arenas my challenge is to engage and inspire a range of people, the majority young. Since I was going to try and run between the classroom and Lincoln Center (about two blocks), outfit choices had to do double duty. Everyone wanted to be in A/W 2014 but in New York it was hot and humid and shows and events are all over town…implicating fabric (cotton) and footwear (flats) choice. I was/am delighted that black and white (and sometimes grey) is in the palette of my favorite designers’ A/W 2014 collections (see my picks on Pinterest).
I ask my readers to ponder this; is it possible for one outfit to meet two completely different sets of expectations? Serve two masters? Work in a conservative world but have enough edge for a creative one? Conform but be independent at the same time? Comments please…
